It is the highlight of the opening programme when 100 debutante couples enthral our guests and audience with a fascinating dance presentation in three-four time.
Not something you see every night: Despite low temperatures, thousands of people will take to the theatre square in front of the Semper Opera House to celebrate the Semper Open Air Ball. While 2,500 guests watch the gala programme inside, up to 15,000 partygoers will be singing and dancing outside in front of the opera house. In rain, freezing temperatures or under starlit skies – the Semper Open Air Ball transforms the square into the world's largest dance floor for the locals and guests. This is something you will not see anywhere else in the world.
Along with the live broadcast of the programme in the opera house, MDR and its presenters also organise a short programme on the stage set up outside just for this evening. There are games and performances – making the Semper Opera Ball's Open Air Ball an event for the whole city.
Every year, a game to match the motto is organised on the theatre square. This game is sponsored by one of our local partners, and gets people from Dresden to see their theatre square in a whole new light. Tombola: Tickets to the tombola can be bought from the charity partner's charity hostesses throughout the evening on the theatre square. There are lots of great prizes to be won. The winners are drawn after the end of the programme on the main stage.
And because our audience is so wonderful, it received the Dresden St. George medal in 2014 for being the best audience in the world.
